Jasmin Simmons

Class of 2011

  • Hometown: Frankfort, Illinois
  • Hall: Pasquerilla West (PW)
  • Major(s): Spanish and Psychology

What was your first impression of ND when you arrived on campus?

I was amazed at how big it seemed. I felt like we walked for hours during the tour, and I was scared that I would never figure out how to get around!

What are your favorite things about student life at ND?

I love that there are so many different activities to get involved in on campus. It’s so tempting to join everything, but I’ve learned balance (and restraint!).

What prompted you to choose your majors?

I’ve been studying Spanish for nearly 10 years, and it really developed into a passion of mine when I started teaching English as a Second Language to Mexican immigrants in South Bend. Deciding to major in Psychology was somewhat of a fluke; my friends and family have always said that I give good advice, so I thought, why not get paid for it?

Extra-curricular involvement:

I’m involved in a lot! Program coordinator of St. Casimir’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program, Vice President of Shades of Ebony, Vice President of Community Alliance to Serve Hispanics, Vice President of the Black Cultural Arts Council, Research assistant in the Culture and Family Processes and Family Research Methods labs, and I have a part-time job.

What do you think makes ND unique from other universities?

Notre Dame is unique because the people on this campus are committed to making a difference. Whether that be through community service, student government, or in the classroom, we students are determined to have an impact that goes beyond our four years.

What are some of the things you enjoy about living in the residence hall?

Well, PW is obviously the best dorm on campus, but what makes it so great is the community fostered within the dorm. From spaghetti dinners to multicultural celebrations to movie nights, the dorm is my “home away from home” so it helps to come into such a welcoming environment.

Do you have any words of wisdom to offer an incoming ND student?

Find out where your passion lies, and look for ways to develop that passion both inside and outside the Notre Dame community. These four years provide endless opportunities—you just have to take advantage of them!
