What was your first impression of ND when you arrived on campus?
At first I was like all other freshmen, wondering what I have to do, when I'm going to un-pack, who am I going to live with, and so on. But Freshmen Orientation was something I never saw coming. Playing dodgeball, having bonfires, water-balloon fights, and getting to know your section mates through jokes and pranks were just a few of the events that made me realize right away that Notre Dame was my new home.
What are your favorite things about student life at ND?
The dorm life and atmosphere are just a couple of things; true, the dorms are single-sex, but you make friends quickly. Aside from your basic college experience, i.e., playing Halo 2 with your buddies, having people over, watching movies, the dorm brought each section together. Plus there is always something to do on campus. Whether you like rock climbing, football or having snowball fights, boredom is non-existent. Then there are the students, dorm rivalries, sports, classes and a whole list of other things that enable you to make a new friend.
What prompted you to choose your majors?
I originally set out as an engineer but quickly realized that it wasn't for me. I took a Political Science class to see what it was like and I was far more interested in the subject matter.
Extra-curricular involvement:
I am involved with the Keenan Revue (the greatest gift to mankind), Keenan interhall commissioner, Zaland Pizzeria worker, Frosh-O staff.
What do you think makes ND unique from other universities?
Pride. It really makes a difference as the pride for our school extends to our dorms, our sports, and each other. Whatever your major may be or wherever you hail from, this pride connects you to the rest of the students and faculty. Tell me, what other place can boast the same pride?
What are some of the things you enjoy about living in the residence hall?
Right away, I'd have to say that the RA's [resident assistants] seal the deal. These guys are not out to restrict you but to help you out and impart their wisdom to you. Combined with dorm events and good section mates, why would you want to leave? Even those who do move off campus, still have a connection to the dorm and often stop by to visit friends and relax.
Do you have any words of wisdom to offer an incoming ND student?
Yup, college is what you make of it. Many preconceived notions of what college life is like will be shattered once you actually experience it. Remember that some of the greatest things that you will learn, you will learn outside of the classroom. So, work hard, play hard. It's as simple as that.
Additional comments:
Sadly only a small group of incoming students will be privileged to live in Keenan.
